Dennis Creffield

Sadly, Dennis Creffield died on the morning of 26th June 2018; he was 87. We made two films with Dennis; one was the ‘Narrative' episode of our series Looking into Paintings, made for Channel 4 in collaboration with The Open University, in which he was the featured artist. We later filmed him as he worked on his commission to draw all the cathedrals of England.

There is currently a small exhibition of his East Anglian work at Snape Maltings until 15th July 2018 as part of the Aldeburgh Festival; our DVD is for sale at the Snape Gallery Bookshop. It can also be purchased direct from Malachite for £15 + £1 UK postage and you can pay here: PayPal.me/filmcan/16

From 15th February until 22nd June 2014, this film was screened continuously at the Pallant House Gallery Chichester, during their exhibition Dennis Creffield: Cathedrals of England and France. While the show was running, the DVD was available from the Gallery bookshop.

The Invisible Recorder

A Malachite Production for Anglia Television

Dennis Creffield makes a return pilgrimage to three East Anglian cathedrals: Peterborough, Ely & Norwich.

“No artist has ever before drawn all the English medieval cathedrals - not even Turner. I’ve dreamed of doing so since I was a student.”

Dennis Creffield

“Creffield’s drawings ‘put together’ surely constitute one of the most significant achievements of English draughtsmanship, indeed of English art since the last war, and perhaps since long before that”
